Modest Mussorgsky’s classic tone poem on a “mountainous” theme is paired with a symphony inspired by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens by the late, great Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness. Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy is a unique work for virtuoso solo piano, chorus and orchestra, similar in many ways to the final movement of his immortal Ninth Symphony.
